Chiayi Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum | The Beauty of Edo Ukiyo-e

Intro|A Poetic Journey Through Ukiyo-e: Illuminated by Light and Shadow

The Beauty of Edo’s Floating World exhibition is now on view at the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum in Chiayi. Through a rich collection of imagery and artifacts, the exhibition invites visitors to explore the aesthetics and everyday life of the Edo period as seen through the lens of ukiyo-e.

YURI Studio is honored to contribute an interactive installation to the exhibition, inspired by The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō, the iconic woodblock print series by ukiyo-e master Utagawa Hiroshige. Focusing on 21 selected post towns along the route from Kyoto to Edo, we created a projection wall with touch interaction and animated visuals. Flowing trails of light guide visitors through scenes of travel and local culture, evoking the poetic rhythm of a journey through Edo-period Japan.

The Journey Begins: A Path of Light from Kyoto

The interactive wall begins in Kyoto, where illuminated light trails stretch eastward toward Edo, symbolizing the journey through the fifty-three stations. More than a route map, this visual sequence acts as an opening movement—guiding visitors into the historical path of the Tōkaidō and setting the tone for a cultural expedition.

Interactive Stations: Bringing Local Scenes to Light

At each of the 21 selected stations, visitors can tap interactive points to view geographic and historical information, along with beautiful prints by Hiroshige and fellow ukiyo-e artists. These artworks vividly capture regional life and local character. Digitally reinterpreted, they breathe new life into static images and revive the collective memory of place.

Animated Surprises: When Ukiyo-e Comes to Life

Certain stations feature hidden animated “easter eggs,” bringing characters and scenes from the prints to life. Moments such as the “porters crossing the river” at Odawara, or the iconic scene in Yokkaichi where a strong gust of wind lifts a traveler’s hat, are presented with subtle movement and charm. These playful details invite visitors to experience the delicate connection between ukiyo-e, geography, and cultural storytelling from a fresh perspective.
