Online personality quiz: Southnpm Enduringlegacy Quiz|Enduring Legacy: A Centennial Celebration of the National Palace Museum

“When life gets too hard, why not slip into another world?”

For Enduring Legacy: A Centennial Celebration of the National Palace Museum, we were invited to create an online personality quiz: southnpm-enduringlegacy-quiz.com.tw. Using three iconic Song dynasty landscapes—Fan Kuan’s Travelers Among Mountains and Streams, Guo Xi’s Early Spring, and Li Tang’s Wind in the Pines Among a Myriad Valleys—as virtual environments, the quiz transforms visual motifs into gateways for self-exploration. It offers viewers a brief escape from daily pressures, guiding their spirit to “run away” into the serene world of Song landscapes.

Digital technology expands cultural reach and deepens audience connection

Users begin by selecting one of the three landscapes as the starting point of their journey. The system then interprets their “Landscape Traveler Type” based on the composition, symbolism, and emotional cues embedded in the chosen painting. The result page provides a personalized “Soul Escape Guide,” suggesting ways users can unwind when everyday stress builds up.

Bringing ancient paintings to life: revealing inner states through the Landscape Traveler

To create an authentic, immersive “step into the painting” experience, we deconstructed signature elements from the three masterpieces and animated them using 2D techniques—mist and clouds, waterfalls, crab-claw branches, drifting boats, travelers on foot, and more. This approach brings motion to classical imagery, turning static Song landscapes into spaces that can be entered, explored, and felt.

Connecting past and present: addressing modern-day stress through ancient art

By highlighting the user’s stress state, the quiz encourages them to “enter another world” and briefly detach from reality. Much like stepping into a painted realm, users explore the spiritual depth of Song landscapes and uncover artistic details from fresh perspectives. This experience accompanies exhibition visitors, allowing them to resonate with classical artworks in a contemporary and meaningful way.
