In 2024, the 15th Golden Indie Music Awards ceremony was held at Taipei Music Center. We were invited to design the background LED visuals for Sorry Youth’s live performance of “Undercurrent.” As the first note landed, a deep blue swell of water texture rose across the entire backdrop, and as the band’s voice built, wave after wave surged forward — extending the image of “the wave” from sound into the full stage and deepening the audience’s dual immersion in music and visuals.
The collaboration was designed around immediacy and impact. Through the choreography of a large-scale background LED wall, we tracked every shift in the song’s rhythm — the instant a drumbeat landed, the image seemed to shudder under the impact; as the guitar solo climbed, beams of light traced sharp, glinting lines across the dark swell. Every rise and fall of the music became a force visible to the naked eye, as if the audience could see the vibration traveling from the musicians’ fingertips.
We broke down the rhythm of ocean waves into visual elements: fine flecks of spray flickered at the edges of the wall, like moonlight catching the crest of a night wave; as the song progressed, the tide built and folded over itself, until it broke into a full wave sweeping across the stage at the chorus’s climax, foam scattering, light churning within it. The musical imagery took shape as an oceanic narrative unfolding before the audience’s eyes, letting them feel the wave’s force break over them even from their seats.
Produced to broadcast-television standards at Taipei Music Center, the waves on the LED wall wove together with live lighting and drifting stage fog into a single, flowing seascape as the cameras cut between angles. Our visual design brought an added layer of depth to the live spirit of Taiwanese-language rock on this stage, amplifying and making visible the tense, surging emotion held inside “Undercurrent” — letting viewers at home feel that same undertow rising from somewhere beneath the surface.
